The annual conference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) provides opportunities to build and strengthen professional networks and experience lifelong learning with friends, colleagues, mentors, and students.

Poet and activist Gary Snyder writes, “The great Central Valley region does not prefer English over Spanish or Japanese or Hmong. If it had any preferences at all, it might best like the languages it has heard for thousands of years, such as Maidu or Miwok, simply because it is used to them. Mythically speaking, it will welcome whoever chooses to observe the etiquette, express the gratitude, grasp the tools, and learn the songs that it takes to live there.”

Fertile Ground invites us to gather around an expansive and inclusive table for continued sustenance and dialogue through ceramic art, teaching, and learning. Sacramento, California will be the hub for all things clay during the 2022 NCECA conference! This hybrid event will incorporate in-person and remote participation building on NCECA’s first virtual conference of 2021. NCECA is working with care to produce a 2022 conference in alignment with California Department of Health guidelines. In accordance with current guidelines, NCECA will be asking all who register for the in-person programming to share proof of vaccination or a negative covid test result taken within 72 hours of the event.

Lectures, demonstrations, networking opportunities, and engagement with vendors, nonprofit organizations, schools, and galleries will be available. Presenters include Natalia Arbelaez, Eliza Au, Jennifer Ling Datchuk, Josh DeWeese, Dr. Wendy Gers, Brian Gillis, Amy Gogarty, Varuni Kanagasundaram, Bonnie Kemske, Samuel Nortey, Reginald Pointer, George Rodriguez, Stacy Jo Scott, Billie Sessions, Takuro and Hitomi Shibata, Timea Tihanyi, Ehren Tool, and many more.
