NCECA 2016, 50TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE March 16-19, 2016 Kansas City, MO

August

Bernadette Esperanza Torres: Blooming Dreams and Fading Memories
Houston, Texas
Opening: August 13th 5-7pm,
Exhibit dates: August 14- October 22, 2015

The UHCL Art Gallery is pleased to present a selection of ceramic sculptures by Kansas City Missouri, Mexican American, Ceramic Artist Bernadette Esperanza Torres. The exhibition marks her first Texas showcase of new work. The Daughter of a florist, Torres incorporated floral and avian imagery into her sculptures. Similar to the explorations of the 17th century Dutch painters of vanitas still-lifes, Torres’ flowers have all been cut from their stems at the peak of their existence. The irony is that despite the celebration of life for which they are used, the flowers’ own death is imminent, and thus they serve as a metaphor for the cycle of life. Birds in her ceramics serve as symbols of humanity, either facets of herself or others. As “Spirit guides” for Torres, They whisper secrets that both encourage and discourage the artist.
