  Ceramics Department Chair - The Art League School

 

Employment Status:  Ceramics Department Chair                                   

Supervisor:  School Director

Hours:  PART-TIME about 24 hours exclusive of teaching hours*

Compensation:  commensurate with experience, range $15,000 to $17,000*

Summary: This position is essential for the design and supervision of numerous processes, as well as facility/equipment and personnel management, to ensure a dynamic and smooth-running department. The Chair works as a team with the School Director to recruit excellent faculty for teaching classes and workshops and to design an effective ceramics program, including assessing the mission of the ceramics department and its Residents’ Program. The Ceramics Department Chair reports directly to the School Director, and works in cooperation with Director of Development on grant writing and with Director of Finance on accounting issues. The Chair is a member of our teaching faculty. *Hours and compensation for teaching would be discussed separately. 

Areas of Responsibility:

Coordination of Ceramics Human Resources (Faculty, Residents, Teachers’ Aides, Monitors, and Volunteers)--

·  Work with the School Director to edit/design job descriptions/contracts and provide orientation, training, and routine evaluation of program.
·  Supervise departmental processes including firings, glaze mixing, clay recycling, kiln/equipment repair/maintenance and “general” housekeeping.
·  Conduct quarterly meetings (or as needed) with department personnel.

Fiscal--
·  Oversee department accounting system, cost analysis, and occasional grant writing.

Departmental Planning/Evaluation--

·  Establish close liaison with the school administration, through regular communication.
·  Work with the School Director and Director of Finance to conduct a cost analysis of the department, including the Residents’ Program.
·  Work as a team with the School Director to recruit excellent faculty for teaching classes and workshops. 
·  Work as a team to design an effective and dynamic ceramics program, including reassessing the mission of the ceramics department and its Residents’ Program.

Facilities Management-- 

·  Work with the Facilities Managers to ensure that the ceramics department facility is safe, clean, and well organized.
·  Oversee and maintain all equipment including kilns.
·   Ensure that the glaze room meets OSHA standards and that all glaze materials are properly secured, identified, and handled.
·  Implement an effective system for assigning students’ and Residents’ shelf spaces each term.
·  Order supplies:  Order, secure, account for inventory of supplies.
